Fig Tree Camp Experience

Fig Tree Camp is located in the quieter south-eastern corner of the Masai Mara National Reserve and is therefore one of the first camps in Mara Reserve to experience the great wildebeest migration. Fig Tree Camp underwent a total refurbishment and is now a mixture of modern and colonial safari style, giving the air of a 1920’s safari camp but upgraded to the 21st century. On arrival, guests are given a friendly welcome at the reception area. Gravel and paving leads to the lounge, which has comfy sofas and armchairs arranged to create different seating areas to relax and while away the time between safari activities, Oriental rugs are scattered on the wood floors and there are bookcases with books and games to keep you entertained and a small bar in the corner. Outside, there are tables and chairs under the trees, and stairs leading down to the river. To the side of the lounge, the dining tent has individual tables – both inside and outside, depending on the weather.  Fig Tree Camp has 80 guest tents, all of these spread out through the bush, along the north bank of the Talek River, and are quite far apart from each other. Each spacious tent is raised from the ground on a low platform and has a separate lounge with a sofa armchair and antique writing desk. The bedroom is through a canvas flap, which can be completely opened up during the day, and has a large antique wooden bed surrounded by a mosquito net. The en-suite bathroom has basins, a freestanding copper bath and a toilet in a separate cubicle. To the front of the tent, on the deck, are some comfortable lounge chairs where you can relax and enjoy views of the river. Fig Tree Camp Location

Fig Tree Camp is located in the northern region of the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, a six-mile drive away from the Olkiombo Airstrip. Guests will fly in from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, a flight that will take approximately 45 minutes, a much shorter journey than the long, five-hour drive from the country’s capital city. Do you go off-road on your game drives?

Off-road driving is not permitted within the Masai Mara Reserve for key wildlife sightings, particularly when it comes to big cats and African wild dogs. Our safari guides adhere to strong ethical values, ensuring that while we get up close to these extraordinary animals, we do so without unnecessarily damaging the soil or vegetation as well as keeping the animals’ comfort in mind. If an animal is shy or fearful, we keep our distance.

Do your game drive vehicles have a roof?

The short answer is yes! After several trials over the years, we’ve found that guests truly enjoy the open-air game drive safari experience with a 360-degree view of the bush, you'll be able to spot birds in the sky, leopards and baboons in the trees, or even the towering heads of giraffes feeding next to the vehicle. While we encourage sun protection, we do provide cozy ponchos should the weather change unexpectedly

What time are your game drives?

Game drive in Masai Mara times vary depending on the season and the timing of sunrise and sunset. In winter (June–August), we typically start the morning game drive around 6 a.m. and the afternoon drive at 3 p.m. In summer, with longer daylight hours, our morning game drive begins at 5:50 a.m., followed by an afternoon game drive at 3:30 p.m., allowing for plenty of rest time in between.

Why do your game drives start so early?

For many, spotting predators like big cats is a top priority, and lions and leopards are most active around dawn and dusk. Starting just before sunrise gives us the best chance to see these magnificent animals in action, rather than merely resting. Additionally, temperatures can rise quickly, making early mornings more comfortable for both guests and wildlife

How many people are in a game drive vehicle?

Unless booked as a private exclusive group or family, we do our utmost to limit each vehicle to just six participants. This ensures everyone has a window seat and ample space for cameras and zoom lenses plus personal belongings.

How long do you stay at each wildlife sighting?

The duration of each sighting depends entirely on the situation! We pride ourselves on not imposing time limits, so if the animal remains visible, we may spend up to 30 minutes or more enjoying the moment. On rare occasions, we may limit the time if we want to ensure other guests also have the opportunity to see the sighting. Masai Mara national Park

The Masai Mara is the most famous of the Kenyan Game Parks, covering an area of some 1,500 square kilometres. Situated in the south-west of the country, it joins with the Serengeti to its south, across the border in Tanzania, to form a huge reserve for the animals within. It gets its name from the tribe who own the land, and still herd cattle here, the Maasai, and the river that runs through the park, the Mara.

The national reserve which has two rivers, the Mara and Talek, naturally divides into three key areas:
1. Sekenani - south-east of the Talek and Mara Rivers
2. Mara Triangle - the land lying between Oloololo Escarpment and the Mara River
3. Musiara - the area between the Mara and Talek rivers

The national reserve has a number of camps and lodges, which can be accessed with a private vehicle and guide. Accommodation within the reserve itself tends to be in larger camps and lodges, and the reality is that these areas have a high density of traffic. We prefer the private conservancies which adjoin the national reserve - all these areas are unfenced to assist the migration of wildlife. These exclusive conservancies have strict limitations on visitor numbers. They tend to be far smaller, high-quality operations, with many of them reached by light aircraft with guests joining game drives in camp 4x4 vehicles led by their own guides, many of them local Maasai. The Mara North Conservancy, 64,000 acres of prime wilderness situated immediately to the north-east of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, works in partnership with local Maasai landowners. In MNC, there are eleven member camps. Each is represented by a land management committee. The committee meets monthly with the Maasai Landowners Committee representing over 800 Maasai landowners, who have opted to lease their land for conservation. The MNC is one of the largest community and private sector owned conservancies in the world and this is the first time many Maasai have been able to receive a direct income from wildlife.  Crucially, all the camps in the private conservancies promote low density tourism with, for example in MNC, one camp visitor to 350 acres. This ensures an exclusive safari experience and minimal impact to the environment and its wildlife. Absolutely! One of our favourite sayings is, “Every tree is a lavatory.” Of course, if there are dangerous animals nearby, your safari guide will advise waiting for a more suitable location. There are no traditional toilets in the bush, so if you prefer a more conventional bathroom stop, we recommend doing so before the game drive begins

How many vehicles are allowed at a sighting?

We strictly limit sightings to 4 vehicles. This policy ensures that the animals aren’t disturbed by multiple vehicles and can move freely if they wish.
